The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
