A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
